Der Begriff "Tiefe" stammt aus der Namensgebung für die vier Prozessfarben im normalen Farbdruck: CMYK - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow und Schwarz erhielt den Buchstaben "K" für "Key" (= Schlüssel, Tiefe). Die Druckplatte für Schwarz wird daher im Englischen auch häufig die "Key Plate" genannt.
Weshalb das so ist, weiß keiner. Wikipedia meint dazu:
"The "K" in CMYK stands for key because in four-color printing, cyan, magenta, and yellow printing plates are carefully keyed, or aligned, with the key of the black key plate. Some sources suggest that the "K" in CMYK comes from the last letter in "black" and was chosen because B already means blue. However, this explanation, although useful as a mnemonic, is incorrect.

As in "im Blau", "im Rot" or "im Gelb". Tiefe is one of the four process colors, see my added note.
