German term

Woiwodschaft

German to English Other Degree Certificate
Herr X, geboren am ... in Starogard Gdanski, Woiwodschaft Gdansk (Danzig) ..."

Part of a degree certificate that was translated from Polish to German, and which I'm now translating into English.

I can't make head or tail of "Woiwodschaft". It is some sort of quasi-Polish word? Or can I forget "Woiwodschaft Gdansk" altogether and just say Danzig?

TIA for helping me clear this one up.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you very much for that. I just did a Yahoo search for "voivodship", and got about 30,000 hits or something along those lines - so that must be it! Evidently, as Eva said, it's a region, or maybe county, district, province etc., but I think I will keep the Polish flavour and call this "voivodship". There are more than enough English-language hits to justify it. Thanks again - appreciate your help."

voivodina = region

If you want to keep the local flavour, you might use the Voivodina transcription, but it is the equivalent of region/county.

disagree Andrzej Lejman : it's former Yugoslavia

Actually, there is a Voivodina there as well, it is appropriate to use something else! I only did not know this Voivodship version.

county, district

The German equivalent would be +/- Grafschaft; nowadays a woiwode is a Polish district governor, formerly the best translation would perhaps have been count.

Voyevodzy

It is indeed, as you guessed, a quasi Polish word for an administrative unit. Similar to a county. The Polish form is województwo. Maybe it would be best to stick with the Polish. (Wojewoda originally means "duke or count").
Peer comment(s):

disagree Andrzej Lejman : it's really quasi-Polish, quasi-English
