German term

Das Blech

German to English Art/Literary Music subtitles to a documentary about a crossover band (classical/Jazz
The title is Das Blech and is the band's name. Any suggestions as to a good translation other than just Brass - that would include all the connotations of the German word. (the name translation would only be for reference in the sub titles rather than for regular band use)

Thanks

thanks all, brass would have been best from an orchestral point of view, nevertheless I felt there was other meanings that would not be implicit in the English, agree with all of you about not translating names etc....
Nicole Schnell Sep 16, 2011:
@buxtondan In case that the asker indeed refers to the German song "Das Blech", it means that something blows your mind to a degree that it makes your car fall apart.
buxtondan Sep 16, 2011:
Of course proper names are generally not translated. And anyway, Blech is any metal, not necessarily brass, at least not in the common parlance.
Nicole Schnell Sep 16, 2011:
Das Blech is the title of a song by the band Spliff. The song is famous for and named after its refrain "da fliegt mir doch das Blech weg". Are you sure that you are talking about the "band's name"?

I am an 80's girl and hardly missed any of the Neue Deutsche Welle concerts... :-)

(sheet metal) ... if you felt you absolutely had to put something in brackets to subtitle the name -- you'd still be losing plenty of connotations and adding other (possibly undesired) ones.

Ideally, I'd leave it as it is.

It's a name and shouldn't be translated. Bapp, Spliff and other German bands were never translated. If you want to describe the band, okay, but the name stays German

neutral Thomas Pfann : The asker doesn't want to translate the band's name but tell the audience what the German name means. Nothing wrong with that.

No, nothing at all!
agree Horst Huber (X) : Don't translate. The word would be "sheet metal". The name of a, thankfully nonexistent, Wagner opera is "Das Wellblech."

Hier ein Link zur Homepage von „Das Blech“, sieben Musikern - überwiegend Blechbläser (hence the name) - aus Jena. Auf ihrer Website haben sie auch ein paar Hörbeispiele. Es lohnt sich, mal reinzuhören - interessante Mischung!

Somit würde „brass“ wohl ziemlich gut passen, um zu erklären, was der Bandname bedeutet.
Note from asker:
