Also the name of the British set-up (The number of times I`ve had to fill out PRS-Returns after a concert!?). Also known as GEMA in D, ASCAP and BMI in the USA and other names in other countries. They are the people who collect in the royalties of artistes for sales of their sheet music, commercial band arrangements of the music, TV and radio airplays, use in advertising and other promotions, jukeboxes etc.
To give an idea of their value to an artiste: Some years ago Peter Green, composer of "Albatross", received a Grammy for over 5 million air-plays of this tune. Every time it is played he receives at present around $25,- (to be value-adjusted over the years). He also composed `Black Magic Woman", which has also had a fair few airplays!
So, if you think you are being underpaid, you now know what to do! ;-)
