German term

vorbefundlich

German to English Medical Medical (general)
I am opening this question again ( was asked before on ProZ) since I want to arrive at a more conclusive result, if at all possible.

I have a discharge letter ( cardio patient) here and under the heading "Diagnoses", 8 conditions are listed; at the end of the list, however, it says:
Vorbefundlich pAVK Stadium 2a bds
Vorbefundlich schizophrene Psychose
Vorbefundlih M. Parkinson.

Now, solely from the linguistic standpoint I would say "previous findings". However, I am not sure if these diagnoses had in fact been conclusively established already. It may well be that they're still "suspected" only (Verdacht auf).

"Working diagnosis"--what do you think about it?

I'd be most grateful if the German natives offered their opinion on this issue. Thanks a lot!

Discussion

Lirka (asker) Sep 11, 2012:
@ Anne, it's a German report ( Bayern) from 2012.

Anne Schulz Sep 11, 2012:
I would really like to know ...whether your text comes from the same source or region as the 2004 one :-) -- Seriously speaking, I'd expect the first five items on the diagnoses list to be the ones that were made or confirmed by the reporting physician, while the "vorbefundlich" conditions are diagnoses outside his field ("patient came with this diagnosis XX, but I did not check it", so to say).
Lirka (asker) Sep 10, 2012:
I don't think "pre-diagnosis" is an actual EN word It would surprise me if it were. But perhaps Cilian can offer his monolingual view on that :):) I'd certainly welcome it.
Peter Gründler (X) Sep 10, 2012:
"pre-diagnosis" is also definitely wrong. "Vorbefund" is a previous report / findings. "pre diagnosis" would translate into "vorläufige Diagnose"
Lirka (asker) Sep 10, 2012:
@Cilian...and @Ellen well, not really. Although I did request an explanation from our German colleagues, I am also looking for a good way of rendering it in English. So we can gloss it.

@Ellen
Yes, I have, but I want to find a better term in EN. Perhaps we can manage, let's see.. "Pre-diagnosis" is awful, IMNSHO.
Ellen Kraus Sep 10, 2012:
@lirka, have you had a look at the KudoZ glossary ? The same question was asked in Dec. 2004, three terms were suggested, all of them were accepted as usable, "pre-diagnosis" was the winner, but I didnt find good links to back it.
Cilian O'Tuama Sep 10, 2012:
monolingual Maybe you should post it as a monolingual Q

Previous diagnoses:

IMO these are definite diagnoses, neither preliminary/tentative/working diagnoses nor just findings, but they were not made during the current hospital stay nor by the reporting physician.
I would suggest to list them under "Previous diagnoses" or "Pre-existing diagnoses" (although the latter may ring too many 'health insurance bells').
Peer comment(s):

agree Jonathan MacKerron : "pre-existing" sounds like a safe bet here

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I think this is it. I wouldn't opt for "pre-existing", though. as a pathological condition may exist for a long time before it's finally diagnosed :):)"

previous finding

vorbefundlich ist ein früherer Befund. Also kein Testergebnis, sondern bereits die Schlüsse daraus. Die eine diagnose beinhalten können, aber nicht müssen. Ob die Diagnose vorläufig oder final ist, wird ebenfalls nicht ausgesagt.

Eine "vorläufige Diagnose" wäre als solche in einem Befund vermerkt.

history of

is perhaps the easiest way to put it. Literally, it means 'according to previous findings', tho...

agree Gisela Greenlee : or "by history" as in "Parkinson's disease by history"

Danke, Gisela!
