German term
Gefälligkeitsbescheinigung
German to English
Bus/Financial
Law: Taxation & Customs
Tax
This is in a letter regarding taxation. They first say they need to find out 'ob diese Mietbescheinigung echt ist' then say 'ob es sich um eine Gefälligkeitsbescheinigung handelt...' Is it perhaps just another way of saying, 'is it a fake document'?

Comment: "I chose bogus document in the end because it was not a receipt or invoice in this case. However, I felt this was more appropriate than accomodation because following 'Mietbescheinigung', 'accomodation' would not have been understood as meaning fake or counterfeit."

I first thought that it meant something that was issued as a favour to someone else, but then I went to dict.leo.org and typed in gefaelligkeit* an all of the compound nouns given that start with gefaelligkeits***, refer to accommodation, e.g. gefaelligkeitspapier = accommodation paper.

They do mean it's a fake, but you would need to put it more politely!
