these instruements are based on real assets and liabilities recorded on the balance sheet, but "synthetic" in the sense that no real movement of such assests or liabilities (sell, purchase) is involved. You pay for the readiness of your counterpart to deliver certain assets/liabilities/securities but, in most cases, they will not be delivered wehen the contract will mature.
