Hi S, that could be misleading IMO, meaning consumers' sense of taste is deteriorating. It has more to do with less product variety. If they were to use one standard (0815) method for all types of cocoa, then all chocolates would end up tasting similar and you wouldn't be able to "taste" where the beans came from, and that'd be öd. (Though your "degeneration" would probably be a consequence of it all, over the course of a few million years :-) .)

: Might even think of "degeneration". / I see your point. But, in a way, degeneration is progressing much quicker: for example, children have become so accustomed to over-sweetened yoghurts that they are no longer aware of how the "real thing" tastes.

: I don't think it's about blandness, in the sense of lacking taste/flavour, but that chocolate would taste similar (less different) no matter which region the beans came from if they were to use the same processing methods for all beans.

The 08/15, a WW1 German machine gun, was widely used and very unpredictable ... sometimes it worked, most often it did not. During WW2, 08/15 became a German slang expression meaning "standard issue" or more often "F.U.B.AR" or "S.N.A.F.U".
