Armorel Young Jul 6, 2009:
Thank you, Colin Many thanks for clarifying that. Your explanation is backed up by references such as this -

The 08/15, a WW1 German machine gun, was widely used and very unpredictable ... sometimes it worked, most often it did not. During WW2, 08/15 became a German slang expression meaning "standard issue" or more often "F.U.B.AR" or "S.N.A.F.U".

Colin Rowe Jul 6, 2009:
08-15... ...refers to a bog-standard pre-WWI-issue machine gun from 19*08* that was upgraded or simply re-issued for use during WWI in 19*15*. It was not a particularly spectacular weapon, but it got the job done, hence 08-15.
This, at any rate, is the explanation I have heard in the past.

08-15-Lösungen Googling "08-15 Lösung" shows that it is widely used to refer to a "standard" or "one size fits all" solution - but I'm still looking for an explanation of where the term comes from.
Audrey Foster (X) Jul 6, 2009:
@ martina1974 I'm afraid I still don't understand the "08-15-Lösungen" thing at all. Looks like I'm missing something obvious :-(
martina1974 (asker) Jul 6, 2009:
The paragraph before this one explains a bit about the run-of-the-mill solutions:

...Der Sinn dabei ist, dass wir den Rohkakao ganz individuell verarbeiten können. Rohkakao aus Nicaragua wird anders verarbeitet als Rohkakao aus Brasilien, selbst wenn am Ende bei beiden eine Milchschokolade herauskommt. ...
Audrey Foster (X) Jul 6, 2009:
@ martina1974 Does the text reveal anything about the "08-15-Lösungen" that are not there ? Just what are these Lösungen and what does 08-15 refer to ?

response to Steffen (not enough room):
Hi S, that could be misleading IMO, meaning consumers' sense of taste is deteriorating. It has more to do with less product variety. If they were to use one standard (0815) method for all types of cocoa, then all chocolates would end up tasting similar and you wouldn't be able to "taste" where the beans came from, and that'd be öd. (Though your "degeneration" would probably be a consequence of it all, over the course of a few million years :-) .)
Peer comment(s):

agree Steffen Walter : Might even think of "degeneration". / I see your point. But, in a way, degeneration is progressing much quicker: for example, children have become so accustomed to over-sweetened yoghurts that they are no longer aware of how the "real thing" tastes.

blandness / tastelessness

I consider it as marking a distinct flavour in a product by crossing out tastelessness in the exposed context.

neutral Cilian O'Tuama : I don't think it's about blandness, in the sense of lacking taste/flavour, but that chocolate would taste similar (less different) no matter which region the beans came from if they were to use the same processing methods for all beans.
