German term
übertragende Bedeutung
German to English
Social Sciences
Education / Pedagogy
child learning difficulties
This is from a report about a 10-year-old boy at a special-needs school. The translation is presumably for the eyes of an English-speaking psychologist/child therapist. That's all the info I have.
Under "Wahrnehmung" it says:
"Er scheint im auditiven Bereich auf der Ebene der **übertragenden Bedeutung** von Begriffen noch Verständigungsprobleme zu haben"
I first wondered wondering whether they mean "im übertragenen Sinne" - but somehow I think it means the range of meanings a word can have. I asked a native colleague, and she wasn't sure either.
TIA for your insights/suggestions!

conveyed meaning?
First of all, it seems that übertragende Bedeutung is sometimes used synonymously with übertragene Bedeutung - metaphorical, figurative.

Ausdruckswert der Wörter (denotativ, konnotativ, übertragende Bedeutung)

Secondly, I don't know how to deal with "Begriff" here, since we're talking about auditory perception. Can concepts be perceived aurally?
In terms of auditory perception, he seems that he still has communication problems on the level of the conveyed meaning of ideas/terms/concepts/signs.
Finally, the problem of conveyed meanings is addressed. The conveyed meaning of an utterance is the information that is communicated by means of the utterance without being literally said. We defend the distinction between literal and conveyed meaning and account for the relation between conveyed meaning, in particular the conveyed meaning which is associated with so-called indirect speech acts, and literal meaning in terms of a system of defeasible rules of thumb. We show that a simple system of such rules can account for a wide range of conveyed meanings.

The perception of sound plays an essential part in the lives of most individuals. Hearing conversation or enjoying music provide some obvious examples. Other examples are less obvious, such as, the effect of music in film, or the emotional meaning conveyed by intonation of the voice. Our laboratory research is aimed at understanding how humans recognize, remember, and interpret these meaningful sound patterns.

In close collaboration with the Auditory System Quality group, the influence of acoustic parameters on the conveyed meaning of auditory signs is being investigated and guidelines for the improved design of auditory signs are being developed.

Note from asker:
Thanks for the extensive input, Kim. It appears they mean "Begriffe" in the sense of words and phrases. I think "conveyed meaning" makes sense here. |
