German term

Scheinselbstständig

Non-PRO Homework / test German to English Other Economics
i found this term in a economics text. If someone could also explain what 230-Euro-Jobs means as well, that would be a great help!

seemingly independent

"scheinen" is "to seem" and "selbständig "is "independent".
(I think you have to post your other question separately).

German term (edited): Scheinselbststndig

ostensibly self-employed

scheinselbständig means that a person is registered as a self-employed person, but only works for one customer as if it was in normal employment.
230-euro jobs are (I think) mini-jobs in which you are not permitted to earn more than 230 euros a month. for the 230 euros you do not have to pay taxes (however, I think now it's 410 euros)

German term (edited): Scheinselbststndig

sham-independent

In financial terms, this is applied to people ostensibly working for themselves, but who are in fact supported - perhaps sponsored - by a company, with the intention that the company is not responsible for social security payments the employer normally has to pay, thus effectively defrauding the revenue authorities. As to the 230 euro jobs, I agree with Robtrans.

German term (edited): Scheinselbststndig

allegedly self employed

Big companies did not employ people but told them to work self employed in order to avoid tax and social security regulations. That was illegal and should be abolished then.
