Rollladen

Steve brought up another interesting problem that I thought I had solved. Are the things "roller shutters" or "rolling shutters"????????

From the language aspect, "roller" makes more sense to me. I had also checked it as follows:

Google English, "roller shutters": 3690

Google English, "rolling shutters": 3190

From these results and my own feeling, I had decided to go along with the slim majority in favor of "roller"

Steve's authoritative AIA reference made me check the Net again and now I know what the problem is:

Google English, "rolling shutters" plus site:.com: 2260

Google English, "roller shutters" plus site:.com: 1040

Google English, "rolling shutters" plus site:.uk: 73

Google English, "roller shutters" plus site:.uk: 1050

Google English, "rolling shutters" plus site:.au: 9

Google English, "roller shutters" plus site:.au: 369

Australia is rather important in this context because many are sold there for heat and sun protection, possibly more than in the UK. Normally the agency involved only gives me stuff for the US, so Steve is probably right with "rolling", but I want some other opinions before asking the customer. The numbers alone are too inconclusive.

TIA

Dan

roller shutters (UK); rolling shutters (US)

From my search engine term research, roller shutters is used in British English and rolling shutters is used in US-English, that's what I've found, but see yourself at Northernlight.com doing an exact term search for both.

UK: roller shutters

Hi Dan

Having lived in the UK for more than a decade, I have never come across "rolling shutters", though I'm no expert.

Hope this helps a bit.

rolling shutters / roller blind

uups, that wasn't intentional (bringing up the roller/rolling issue). I was just quoting my AIA book. I've just double-checked, and they do indeed talk only about "rolling shutters". My German/English building dictionaries, on the other hand (2 different ones by Buksch, and one by Gelbrich/Reinwaldt) consistently offer "roller blind" for "Rolladen" AS WELL AS "rolling shutters".

I hope that's not "more oil on the fire".

may I comment on "roller blind"

Also das würde ich als "Rollo" bezeichnen und dabei gibt's dann noch "Springrollo" und "Seitenzugrollo". Rollos werden auf der Innenseite des Fensters angebracht, Rollladen meiner Meinung nach auf der Außenseite.

may I comment on sparkie's comment on "roller blind"

I understand what you're saying, Sparkie. However, I disagree. The "Rollos" that you're referring to and which are usually mounted indoors are typically called "blinds" and not "roller blinds". Also, a quick Google search for "roller blinds" returns both (the indoor and outdoor variety - so I suppose we're both right/both wrong). Also, if a roller blind is mounted indoors, then what on earth is a "Rolladenkasten"? I've been translating that as a "roller blind housing" for the past 10 years (architectural software sold worldwide) and, so far(and fingers crossed) nobody has yet complained (it doesn't necessarily mean I'm right, of course!).

roll-up blinds

Hi Dan,

We just bought a bunch of these, from 3 ft. to 12 ft. in length, for our sun porch -- one of my various unfinished projects. :-) So I went out to the garage to see what they're called on the label: ***Vinyl Roll-Up Blinds***. Now these are made of of may horizontal 'sticks' and available in 4 colors, two lengths(48" and 72" and many widths. (Informally we learned to ask for _porch screens_ while shopping. Inside versions (made of roll-up sheeting) we just call blinds. I bet Uschi can help you with the Australian versions.

Could we please get back to the "roll" part?

Thank you all for your lively interest and great suggestions but let me please interrupt.

For me, the thing is only a shutter, basta.

"Rolling", "roller", "roll up" or " roll down" might all be right but a "blind" or "screen", whether inside or outside, must be somehow be connected to optics or vision or light in my opinion. Rollladen, in most of the world where they are widely used, are far too expensive to just prevent peeping Toms (no offense, Tom) from having a look. Simple, normal, cheap curtains or shades or blinds or screens are for that. Rollladen are there to prevent much more expensive, serious problems like breaking and entering, to prevent heat energy from escaping in the winter or coming in summer in Australia, or to prevent hurricane or typhoon window damage in Queensland or Florida.

If they are well designed, they can of course also ruin the peeping Tom's evening but I feel that "blinds" or "screens" is a bad idea from a commercial standpoint because the product then sounds cheaper to most people and far out of line with the extremely high price.

By the way, neither "roll up" nor "roll down" get many hits, and besides that, which one of the two should I choose?

So now that I've said that, you can all get back to your discussion about "rolling", "roller", "roll up" and "roll down".

Please do not think that I do not appreciate your interest because I really do!

Thanks again,

Dan

roller shutters

why did Tom rattle my cage?

Well, a 'down-under' google-search favours roller shutters with a 5 % lead.

But, regarding JUST SHUTTERS:

When working in the jewellery trade I had to roll down the shutters at the end of the trading day,

if talking about closing the shutters it could also refer to 'Fensterläden', in general 2 hinged louvered wings, timber or aluminium, if timber, not necessarily louvered.

I better shutter up now. Regards to all, Uschi
