German term

Feinabruf

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks production management and logistics
Here's the paragraph in German where the word "Feinabruf" appears:

By the way, I found this description in German on the Web concerning "Feinabruf": "Der Feinabruf ermöglicht tägliche und auch stündliche Abrufe vom Automobilhersteller. Er dient als gezielte Fertigungs- bzw. Versandinformation für den Zulieferer."

Judging from this reference, "Feinabruf" is one step up from your regular garden variety just-in-time delivery to customers. But I can't figure out what it would be in English.

This is what I have so far: "...there was a relatively steep start-up curve, the shortest lead time ever for just-in-time deliveries to the customer, and last but not least, ..." etc.

In other words, I've left out the word "Feinabruf."

Is there an English equivalent to "Feinabruf" out there? Something along the lines of "just-in-time precise requisition"? I look forward to hearing from all you automotive and manufacturing experts!

Context: This is from a short interview with the head of a company that manufactures/assembles complete axle systems and supplies them to a carmaker. The interview is part of an article appearing in a quarterly magazine published by the parent company, which is a major international automotive supply group (manufacturing everything from transmissions to axles and steering columns, etc.). The article praises the logistical talent of the subsidiary - the axle systems supplier.

The audience is international - so the English should be as "neutral" as possible. The magazine is read by workers and employees as well as potential customers and the general public.

Thanks in advance.

See. http:/de.wikipedia.org/wiki/EDIFACT
I think the information provided (see the reference to the acronym DELJIT) is quite clear.
While googling (www.google.de, Feinabruf, component) I also came across two other expressions, but they seem to be company specific: VW: daily call-off; Audi: precise supply call-off.
So the interviewee obviously mixed English and German ...
Note from asker:
Yes, it appears the speaker was mixing up English and German. Not an uncommon occurrence...
Thanks for your answer, Brigitte! I totally agree. During the interview, the person speaking merely combined a bit of English and German.

Yes, Paul. No doubt your client wants this translation delivered yesterday.
Note from asker:
An interesting suggestion, Andrew. It's hard to imagine anything being faster than just-in-time. Maybe just-ahead-of-time?!

It indicates the inventoriesw/goods held by exporters/suppliers at various locations to reduce the lead time of delivery. Our company, "Moser Baer", a leading manufacturer of optical magnetic media (CDs, DVDs, etc.) hold inventories in key locations in Europe and US to cater to the needs of customers promptly.

Note from asker:
Thanks. Actually, this company maintains an extremely limited inventory (to keep costs down) - so off-the-shelf delivery wouldn't fit. But it was a good suggestion. Although you mentioned "just-in-time delivery" in passing (before anyone else!), I gave the points to Brigitte because she rightly assessed that the German term "Feinabruf" refers to JIT.

Daily Call-off

The ***Daily Call-off (FAB-Feinabruf)*** in VDA 4915 format will only be implemented where the delivery process justifies the use of this message. At present, we are transmitting the daily call-off to more than 500 of our partners. From the first half of 2000 EDIFACT-DELFOR is used for the daily call-off alongside VDA 4915.

Thanks for your input, Patrick. It looks like "detailed call-off" is an alternative for "just-in-time."

just-in-time delivery instructions

I think what could be meant here is the shortest time (shortest cycle times) between the just-in-time instructions and the actual delivery. (Zeitfenster). That would be the shortest lead time based on just-in-time delivery instructions. Important for the world-wide delivery needs of this company. So, the word "Feinabruf" could here simply refer to "call off/instructions." The concept to which the interviewee refers to is IMO "just-in-time."

daily, just-in time delivery:

Ashley Ward’s customers know their orders will arrive on time and in excellent condition.

Daily call-off
An optional delivery instruction that is sent daily referring to a planning period of max. 15 days (delivery dates).
The daily call-off data have priority over the delivery instruction.

More than 2000 suppliers receive the Delivery Instruction (LAB-Lieferabrufdaten) predominantly in VDA 4905 format from Volkswagen/Audi. Since 1993 the Delivery Instruction in VDA 4905/2 format, which is based on the ODETTE message DELINS, is available as an alternative. From the first half of 1999 EDIFACT-DELFOR is used for the delivery instruction alongside VDA and ODETTE. Starting off the EDI relationship with a partner engaged in the supply process cycle "production material", Volkswagen/ Audi will always transmit the delivery instruction first.

http://www.vwgroupsupply.com/b2b/vwb2b_folder/supplypublic/e...

With the application WebEDI, we enable all not EDI-capable suppliers to receive delivery instructions. Sending of paper mail or faxes becomes obsolete and will be dropped.

short cycle times /original JIT concept
Note from asker:
Thanks for your answer, Bernhard. Your answer basically confirms what Brigitte said, i.e., that 'Feinabruf' is the German equivalent to just-in-time. The information that you gave about 'instructions' was good food for thought, but I think in this particular case it's understood that the extremely short lead time includes the concept of giving intructions to the supplier.
