Verwertung

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks Used cars
Source: "Die hohe Kompetenz XYZs in der Verwertung
von Gebrauchtfahrzeugen". From a presentation about a used-car company. "Recovery" sounds plausible to me, but I don't know enough about used cars. The meaning here is simply to spruce up the cars for re-sale. Would "recovery" fit or does that mean more the process of thoroughly re-vamping damaged cars?

Discussion

Orla Shanaghy (asker) Jan 29, 2007:
How about "salvage"? Or is this again too suggestive of scrap cars?
Orla Shanaghy (asker) Jan 29, 2007:
No, it definitely means just to make repairs, tidy them up etc. so they can be re-sold. I've just come across "Rücknahme" in the same document and in the same context. Could _this_ be "recovery"?
David Moore (X) Jan 29, 2007:
"Verwertung" of used cars usually means stripping them down and re-using the (usable!) parts - are you quite sure that is not the meaning here?

refurbishing

Recovery is to "recover" the materials contained within the car or the energy contained within those through incineration.

Ruecknahme is the "take-back" system or collection of old/scrap cars (aka end-of-life vehicles or ELVs) required by the producer responsibility obligations arising from EU Directive 2005/53/EC. Working cars can be refurbished and resold. Scrap cars or ELVs are usually dismantled, shredded, recycled and recovered.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Erin and everyone else. The customer finally replied to my queries. It turns out the word was "unglücklich gewählt" and she actually meant "Inzahlungnahme" i.e. trade-in. Grr! Thanks again!"

recycling

maybe it is just this term
Peer comment(s):

agree Gert Hirschfeld : yes, quite likely. Recovery of cars usually means "Bergung von Unfallwagen" but doesn't describe the use of the wreckage.

disagree Riesling : not in this context - the cars are not wrecks, but used cars simply being spruced up for re-sale
