È il famoso "Quartettsatz", il primo tempo dell'incompiuta, giovanile e unica composizione cameristica di Mahler. In realtà si tratta di un quintetto per pianoforte e quartetto d'archi, del 1876:

Errata corrige: è comunque un quartetto per pianoforte e archi, in quanto comprende pianoforte, viola, violino e violoncello. Manca infatti il secondo violino come nei più comuni quintetti per pianoforte e (quartetto d')archi.

La denominazione di questo primo e unico movimento è "Nicht zu schnell. Entschlossen" ("Non troppo presto, deciso"). Del secondo tempo, "Scherzo", rimangono invece solo i primi schizzi.

È un brano che pochi conoscono e che viene eseguito molto raramente: io stesso non lo vedevo menzionare da tempo immemorabile. Si può paragonare, sotto certi aspetti, al forse un po' più noto primo tempo (Adagio) della Sinfonia n. 10, del 1910, rimasta incompiuta per la morte di Mahler nel 1911, e poi ricostruita in varie versioni, altrettanto poco note, da diversi musicisti e musicologi.

Ecco perché il termine "famoso" che ho utilizzato all'inizio per questo brano, merita tutte le virgolette possibili, in quanto intendevo che il pezzo, proprio per la sua rarità e particolarità, è noto quasi esclusivamente ai conoscitori e agli appassionati di Mahler.
