French term

un poste amodié

French to English Bus/Financial Ships, Sailing, Maritime
The heading of a block diagram is as follows:

La vie d'un **poste amodié**

This is followed by arrows with words such as "Occupe son poste" and "N'occupe plus son poste".

I know that "un contrat d'amodiation"
= a lease agreement.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Discussion

Chris Hall (asker) Feb 10, 2010:
My final decision... allocated berth.
Chris Hall (asker) Feb 10, 2010:
Stéphanie... Many thanks for your help.
Carruthers (X) Feb 10, 2010:
makes more sense Stéphanie come to think of it
Stéphanie Soudais (X) Feb 10, 2010:
So IMO "poste" is "emplacement" (loué par un bateau dans un port)
Chris Hall (asker) Feb 10, 2010:
Stéphanie It is a lease contract / agreement.
Chris Hall (asker) Feb 10, 2010:
Stéphanie... Apologies, I agree that more context is needed.

It is a block diagram with arrows. Here is examples of the arrows and the text they contain:

Context? What is the text about? All references on the web are about sailing.
Chris Hall (asker) Feb 10, 2010:
Carruthers... Yes, all I could find for "amodier" (p.p. = amodié) was "farmed out", which I did not like. However, I believe that "outsourced" seems much more appropriate here. Many thanks Carruthers.
Carruthers (X) Feb 10, 2010:
Hello Chris,
would this be "outsourced" function ?
"amodier" as in "farm out"?

allocated

an "allocated" place of mooring (or fastening ring) for a boat ?

In the field of ports and moorings, you can talk about "navires amarrés sur postes (d'amarrage) amodiés" and also about "amodiataire de poste d'amarrage".
Note from asker:
Many thanks for your very good answer. I have chosen "allocated berth". You will be awarded the points upon expiry of the mandatory 24 hours. Kind regards, Chris.

Temporary position/location

improved/enhanced/arranged

A little known but verified meaning of amodiation is, if I remember right, improvement, or "coming to an arrangement", maybe, "meeting in the middle" (the root mode is the same that gives us "medium", hence "middle".

It was asked a few months back and I gave a number of references at the time. One, I remember, was in astonished admiration of Jean-Marie Le Pen for having used the word in this sense.

Sorry, I was a little off-target with my explanation above.

Does it refer to a particularly tiring or tiresome job for which arrangements have been made so that the worker does not spend all day doing it, or something like that?

amodiation = lease

"Federal prosecutors investigating former Gov. Mike Easley and his wife took a new tack yesterday with grand-jury subpoenas looking for information about a marina lease that once drew an ethics complaint about him."

But maybe "concessioned" or even "taken" would also do the job, according to context.
