French term

damiers

French to English Medical Medical (general) Eye tests
Context:

Is there a specific word for a checker board pattern?
TIA Chris.

checkboard pattern

The specialist literature seems to use this term.

"The pattern stimulus was a small 5-degree field composed of 64 square checks each 36’ of arc reversing at 2/second. [...] Note the interhemispheric variability in Fig. 3a and 3c; and note checkerboard pattern reversal stimulation of the small 5-degree foveal area activates nearly as much cortical EEG surface activity as the 30-degree field of pattern stimulation displaying fMRI activity in Fig. 3a. [...]
The most common stimulus used is a checkerboard pattern, which reverses every half-second (Figure 4). [...]"

Thanks, Debora! I saw the mistake just an instant after pressing "submit answer" :)
agree B D Finch : That's correct for the US. For UK "chessboard" would be more familiar as we call the other game draughts, not "checkers", but if we did use the latter term, it'd be "chequerboard", which I see is also used in this context. So: full agree with alt spelling

Thanks, Barbara. In this specific context the American term and spelling, though not universal, seem fairly common among Br specialists too; here's a doctor from Addenbrooke's Hosp in the BMJ: http://jnnp.bmj.com/content/46/12/1125.full.pdf

chessboard pattern

A UK English alternative, "chequerboard" is really US as they call the game of draughts "chequers".

If for US, then "checkers", not "chequers". :(
Note from asker:
Hi, Thanks for the reminder about US versus UK. Job already delivered and from memory it was for US office so chequers OK.
