French term

traitements optimisés par laxatifs

French to English Medical Medical (general)
Context:
Il existe des alternatives thérapeutiques (traitements optimisés par laxatifs).

I understand this as "treatments/therapies improved by laxatives", but I have a colleague who has translated this sentence very differently. Can someone let me know if they think I've understood this correctly?

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Rosa Paredes

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

optimal treatment with laxatives

"traitements optimisés par laxatifs" is the plural of "traitement optimal par laxatifs"
IOW the alternative to this medication is the most effective laxative treatment available used in an optimal way.

Cette étude apporte des données nouvelles sur un médicament récemment commercialisé au Canada. Une seule autre étude clinique s’attardant à la détermination des doses de MNTX à utiliser a été publiée1. Vu le peu de données disponibles et l’absence de comparaison avec le traitement optimal par laxatifs, il est difficile de définir avec précision la place actuelle de ce médicament prometteur parmi les thérapies existantes de la constipation secondaire aux opioïdes.

There is of course nothing wrong with using "therapy" in the place of "treatment", however I don't think that "optimized" is the right word here.

Please tell me which treatments for constipation are enhanced by using laxatives?

When should it be used?
Methylnaltrexone should only be considered for use by
palliative care specialists, when constipation is related to
opioid use and optimal / maximised laxative combinations, or
rectal measures (where appropriate), have not been effective.
The patient’s laxative regimen must be continued whilst
taking methylnaltrexone.

The source document in which the meaning is patent (but you have to read the whole lot, not just the phrase in question):

merci :-)
agree Anne Pietrasik : However, the French is ambiguous. This could refer to another type of drug, the effect of which would be enhanced by concurrent laxative therapy. (le traitement est optimisé par l'administration de laxatifs). C'est sûr qu'avec contexte, c'est mieux ! ;-)

In fact it becomes less ambiguous when you read the source text and related documents (which I did) - thanks :-)

optimized laxative therapy

would be my suggestion
Peer comment(s):

neutral Chris Hall : It is most certainly not to be translated as "therapy" here.
