French term

ponctuelles

French to English Medical Medical (general) Prevention of Microbial Contamination
Hello

This word has me stumped as it can mean more than one thing.

This occurs under the heading "Gap Analysis" in relation to procedures for the prevention of microbial contamination.

Derniers exercises de QP environnementale conformes: XXXXXXX

Anomalies des controles environnementaux microbiologiques ponctuelles documentées et investigées donnant lieu a des actions correctives.

[there should be a circumflex on the "o" of controles, and a grave accent on "a...des actions".

Thank you!

Féminin My point exactly.
Alexandre Vonrospach (X) Mar 19, 2009:
ponctuelles judging from the grammar, the adjective 'ponctuelles' refers to 'anomalies' and not the 'controles' (which is masculine). What I understand by anomalies ponctuelles is that they are regular without being systematic. The other meaning of ponctuel is 'being on time', which I think is irrelevant in this context.
Drmanu49 Mar 19, 2009:
If it is ponctuelles the feminin adjective can only refer to anomalies, contrôles is masculin.
Jean-Louis S. Mar 19, 2009:
Cela ressemble étrangement à une mauvaise traduction...

Note from asker:
Hi I have found another reference and think they may be talking about "point contamination", what do you think? http://209.85.229.132/search?q=cache:za2cQT2QNY0J:www.proz.com/kudoz/french_to_english/nuclear_eng_sci/1578608-sonde_%C3%9F_par_frottis.html+contamination+ponctuelle+point&cd=11&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk&lr=lang_en

If it is "ponctuelles" the feminine adjective can only refer to anomalies, "contrôles" is masculine.

random

whether qualifying "contrôles" (should there be a mistake) or "anomalies", this will work here

I don't sense any notion of regularity or recurrence in "ponctuel" - being the opposite of routine.

neutral Lionel_M (X) : Je ne vois rien de "random" dans le mot "ponctuel" en FR; http://www.mediadico.com/dictionnaire/definition/Ponctuel/1

it is very often used to mean "non routine" "from time to time" "here and there" which can be perfectly well translated by "random"
