Whilst JCEC's 'pinions' is certainly far from wrong, I just wanted to add that in more everyday tech. speak, 'gear' is usually a perfectly adequate alternative.

As far as 'sprocket' is concerned, I have slightly more doubts, inasmuch as there is already a perfectly good word for sprocket available in FR, so why use a different one? However, only the wider context will perhaps tell you wheteher this is a sprocket driving a chain or toothed belt, or a gear driving another gear (etc.) --- there IS a difference!
