French term

Nuage des variables actives

French to English Social Sciences Mathematics & Statistics taxonomy
context: statistical taxonomic document

Représentations sur les deux premiers axes. Éboulis des valeurs propres. Nuage des variables actives. Nuage des variables supplémentaires. Nuage des individus regroupés en trois classes par HCPC.

Please can any one help me with this? the word " nuage" is again more likely to be a computer term...
It is the sentence that follows 'éboulis des valeurs propres' so maybe the person who gave me the excellent answer yesterday, also has the key to this puzzle?

cloud of active variables??

@ Cassandra It is not a computer term, at least not for older people :).

What kind of diagams do you have, 2D or 3D?

cluster of active variables

The technique is Hierarchical Clustering on Principal Components. So, "cluster" seems more appropriate. "cloud" does exist but tends to be used more in Geometric analysis.

agree rkillings : Yep. And valeurs propres = eigenvalues.

Thanks rkillings. Yes, indeed.

Cloud of active variables

You are correct, "nuage" is an IT term and it refers to the "cloud". "Active variable" also makes sense to me.
Peer comment(s):

agree Elmachich : Ya "cloud" is becoming more and more used in IT.

neutral DLyons : Maybe, but this has nothing to do with "the cloud" in its Computing sense.

Scatterplot of active variables

According to my IT expert, "scatterplot" refers to marks placed on a graph according to x and y values.

Peer comment(s):

agree claude-andrew : Comparison of an image search on (a) nuage des variables and (b) scatter plot is convincing

neutral DLyons : A scatterplot is a "nuage de points". "nuage de variables" is rarely used and IMHO more usually in a Geometric context. (And the comparison of the Google images doesn't provide much evidence for this identification).

disagree rkillings : Scatterplot is a technique of visual representation or a graph drawn using it. The 'nuage' is a pattern perceived within the scatterplot. The cloud is not the sky./ The scatter (of the data set) is not the scatterplot.

Cloud

Clustering occurs within a cloud of data points or "data cloud".

"Proposed approach
Assuming that we have retrieved some clusters, our approach is articulated as
follows (see Fig. 1):
1. Linked Data Selection
. We retrieve information about the data contained
in each cluster from the Linked Data cloud, across several datasets."

"Multivariate statistical methods provide a number of different approaches to solving this ... Hierarchical Cluster Analysis is probably the most common method of analysis ..... we find the line through the “cloud” of data points which minimises the ..."
