I would be interested if anyone knows the correct translation of "rapprochement" or the definition bearing in mind that it is not the same as a merger.

bringing together/asociation
If it's referring to people it would be "bringing together" or "reconciliation". If it's in a political context, it is also "rapprochement" (same word). If it's companies, perhaps they mean a some sort of "afiliation", "asociation" or "joint venture?

In the U.S., you have either \"joint ventures\" (cooperative projects where the founding members keep their corporate identities) or \"mergers\" (one company buys another and may or may not disolve its corporate identity). \"Consolidation\" refers to the joining of companies (usu. via mergers and acquisitions), resulting in ever-larger corporations and therefore reducing the number of players in a given industry.
