French term

non épuration

French to English Medical IT (Information Technology) Clinical trials
Context:
Est-ce que le projet implique la non épuration des dossiers cliniques pour une période de plus de 5 ans

Presumably this means "leaving the files alone" or something along those lines
Is there a standard way of saying this?
TIA Chris

Discussion

Suzie Withers Jul 28, 2020:
@Sue @Yolanda My discussion note was not a proposed translation, just wanted to put forward some terms that relate to data protection and management. Yes "data" would be too wide a concept to use as a translation, which is why I didn't propose this as a translation. "Retention of clinical records" would probably be better. I find it odd that the source text uses "non épuration" - a negative term. Do they really mean not cleansing the data, or do they just mean retention (not purging)? That's why I haven't posted a translation because I'm not sure precisely what is meant.
Drmanu49 Jul 28, 2020:
I suggested updating as a better technical term than cleaning up IMHO.
Sue Davis Jul 28, 2020:
I have already suggested cleansing in my answer. I don't think "dossiers cliniques" can be translated as simply "data". Nor are clinical files./records necessarily the same as a patients medical records see - https://www.medicalprotection.org/ireland/booklets/medical-r...

Suzie Withers your discussion contrib as ansswer Suzie,
Your explanation makes sense. Post it as a answer!
Suzie Withers Jul 27, 2020:
Data cleansing or data retention Data cleansing is widely used when talking about data - this usually means making data consistent (e.g. where the same person has multiple records due to incorrect spelling or if postcodes are incorrect).

So is this saying that the data will not be cleansed for a period of over 5 years, or do they just mean that the data will be retained for that period? My initial reading was that it was about data retention rather than data cleansing... but I might have got that wrong

(I have worked on data protection projects regarding data retention and disposal)

keep

In this context, I'd suggest using 'keep', such as having to keep your tax or company records for at least five years. Another possibility could be 'maintain'.

Example from the first NHS website link:
E.g. "NHS organizations wishing to keep records more than 30 years old for operational reasons beyond the minimum period specified in this Code should..."

Retention

My take on it is that they are talking about retention of clinical records - i.e. non purging - rather than cleansing/clean-up. Retention is a widely used term.

However, the use of "non-épuration" is a little confusing - why use a negative term? So that's why my confidence level is only medium.
Peer comment(s):

agree B D Finch : How about "retention in full"?

Thanks B D - I guess you could add "in full" but it shouldn't be necessary, IMO

non separation and preservation

Cleaning and purification of files are possibilities but with the negative prefix ('non') the files must be not separated, and thus should be left for the time.

The files could be separated in the event that some would remain in the same place, while others may be moved to another place of storage. Cleaning and purification of files is a process which may take place where files and paperwork storage are wanted to be in a conservation area without too much accumulation of dust.
