French term

masters

French to English Tech/Engineering IT (Information Technology)
Hi all,

I'm translating a case study for an IT solution, specifically one that harmonises IT support for users in all countries that the company in question is active in and that consolidates central governance.

One of the bullet points under the Solution heading is "Déploiement de ce modèle dans les 40 pays et mises à jour des masters", ce modèle referring to the above description.

Could anyone shed any light on what "masters" refers to? There's no other reference to it in the text whatsoever.

Thanks

Discussion

patrickfor Aug 3, 2015:
@Nikki et al.
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Aug 3, 2015:
"Systems" is not a general term here. Taking into account the highly plausible explanation put forward by Patrick, then "masters" alone probably does the trick, in context anyway.
patrickfor Aug 3, 2015:
Lloyd Bingham (asker) Aug 3, 2015:
That seems like a very apt solution. Many thanks Phillippa, Nikki and Paul!
Philippa Smith Aug 3, 2015:
Yes, it does seem as though it should be "master somethings" in English, maybe you could use "master systems", nice and general, and would make sense in the context: the master systems already in place would have to be updated when the new model is rolled-out...
Lloyd Bingham (asker) Aug 3, 2015:
The preceding and only other bullet point under 'Solution' is: Mise en place d’un modèle industriel de services doté d’une forte gouvernance centralisée, garante de l’application des process et et du socle technique sur tout le périmètre, so I'm not too sure what the noun could be.
Lloyd Bingham (asker) Aug 3, 2015:
Thanks Nikki. I had already ask the client but typically it's a very long chain of communication between me and the end client and someone in the middle isn't able/willing to pass the query on.
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Aug 3, 2015:
I see the dilema. English would probably be using this as an adjective before a noun and so the noun providing the clue, as it were, is "missing". If not clear from your context, are you abel to ask your client? The other safety-net option might be to simply leave "masters", which is a little unsatisfactory.

I don't think you should try to guess what kind of masters are being referred to. It's not your job, and you should simply reproduce what the French says.

master server / versions

perhaps something like master servers / versions / copies
Peer comment(s):

agree patrickfor : probably something along this line... Master image ?

disagree Daryo : what would be the connection to either "harmonising IT support" or "consolidating central governance" + master server and master versions are two totally different answers - which one is it supposed to be?
