French term

dos reculant

French to English Tech/Engineering Furniture / Household Appliances
Does anyone know what feature this is when applied to an orthopaedic/relaxation electric bed?

"structure mobile metallique, réglage du niveau du fermeté des lattes, option dos reculant".

Any help much appreciated, thanks.

Hi again Emma I eventually went with "anti-stomach compression system", which was my very first guess before posting this on Proz, my main concern being that it bore no resemblance to the French and that a "dos reculant" could have had other benefits apart from avoiding stomach compression... (such as preventing people from slipping forward etc., which is also commonly cited in conjunction with this feature). In the end though, it seemed clear from the refs found on the internet that this was the equivalent term in English, so if you'd like the points, feel free to post it as an answer! :-)

Me again I didn't find anything else on this, Vicky. I'm not sure 'tilt' is correct as from the description of the system it's more of a sliding movement. Not sure though!
Emma Paulay May 26, 2009:
Slide back system? This description talks about sliding...

Thanks, Emma Do you think that "reverse tilt" covers it here?
Emma Paulay May 26, 2009:
Confirm From the description here, it is a function to avoid compressing the stomach:

Hello, thanks for your answer, but I think there is more to it than this. I am thinking it has something to do with a "reverse tilt" function. From what I can glean from other beds with this feature, I think it's where the bed dips down a bit in the middle so that the person in it avoids compressing their stomach and/or slipping forwards. Can anyone confirm or deny this? :-)

I think this means the back of the bed can be adjusted so it is not horizontal to make it easier to reach sitting position. There are some images of this and a description linked below, maybe they will point you in the right direction.
