French term

compte de passage

French to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) computerised banking systems
Context: this is a computerised system for inputting collected cheques, in the case in point, those collected by the client bank's correspondent banks.

Live source material:
"... si on souhaite des écritures regroupées au niveau du compte du correspondant ... les chèques saisis dans une journée seront comptabilisés individuellement à un **compte de passage** qui sera soldé en fin de journée par une écriture globale au correspondant"
=
"...if it is wished that collected-cheque inputs be grouped together for a given correspondent bank's account, the cheques input during a given day will be individually entered to a **compte de passage** which is closed at the end of the day by a global entry to the correspondent-bank account."

The accounting entry routine is summarised roughly as follows in a number of the text locations:
"DR Compte du correspondant ou compte de passage >>>montant du chèque"
=
"DR Correspondent-bank account or **compte de passage** >>> cheque amount"

This may be another way of saying a "suspense account"; I thought of "posting account"; possibly "transit account".

Any offers will be very gratefully received.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Nov 19, 2004:
Compte de passage - Roundup First, thank you all very much for your contributions!
I rule out "sweep account" here, since this is a way of earning interest on credit and uncleared balances, which are automatically "swept" into such an account to "optimise" its interest-earning potential (what a mouthful). Anyway, it's well worth trying, and thanks in any case.
I found I had "compte d'attente" for "suspense account" in the text, and it reminds me that I should try and contribute this sort of helpful background information in future.
So that left me with a "pending account", which was very apt, because these "comptes de passage" were "soldés" at the end of a day's business, i.e. the "pending accounts" were "cleared".
Il s'agit bien de compensation interbancaire, mais l'élément compta y entre. Il ne s'agit pas directement de trésorerie, plutôt du règlement des cheques tirés sur ou venant de l'étranger et provenant des correspondants bancaires.
Again thank you very much all of you. I hope I can be of similar service.
