French term

à préserver

French to English Science Environment & Ecology natural habitats
It is not a problem of comprehension but more one of coming up with a natural TL translation. Here is the context:

"Des avis motivés seront aussi adressés à 10 Etats membres par la Commisssion pour non-communication de la liste complète des habitats naturels à préserver."

The Commission shall also send reasoned opinions to 10 member states for not having provided the full list of natural habitats (à préserver).

I have toyed with the following options but am not satisfied with any as I feel the result is stilted in English : to be converved/preseved/protected). The more I think about it, the more I feel the need to break away from the SL syntax.

I would very much appreciate your comments.
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Julie Barber

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Suezen. All advice was helpful here but your option was closest to what I ended up going for. As Dylan mentionned, numerous EU sources refer to "natural habitats requiring..." and this is the option I chose. Thanks to all."

endangered

I suppose one way round it would be to use "endangered natural habitats" - assuming that all the habitats to be protected are in fact endangered....

possible conservation areas

it needs a little work but in this context I would try and use conservation rather than any of these verbs. These areas/habitats are possible candidates for conservation etc. Hope this helps.

As suggested by Tony...

agree Rachel Fell : tho' I prefer preservation

unfortunately, conservation is the word used in "environmental English"
agree Lara Hill-Gentile (X) : Conservation is appropriate in this field, or even "safeguard" sometimes.
