Given that the activity "fumisterie" refers to chimney engineering, I imagine your text is referring to the "chimney" parts of the system after the boiler. Sure, lighting the boiler will dry out the refractory elements in the furnace, but the hot exhaust gases will also dry out the flues.

if i understand the french sentence, they talk about 2 things: the "fumisterie" (exhaust stacks, piping of the boiler) and the refractories. drying out of the stacks, means reducing the water content in it to prevent condensation...i dont think that "lining" is necessary at all.
