DES

French to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng Mobile phone functional tests
For obvious reasons, it's impossible to meaningfully google this acronym.

Discussion

Thanks to all and, yes, later sections confirm décharge électrostatique. It's 30 000 words in 8 files so pre-reading is taking a bit of time.

@clain Thanks - yes, this looks corroborative. More acronyms to come ...
Claire Nolan Aug 5, 2011:
Claude-Andrew, I think you might be right: System Level ESD Tests
To better understand device performance within an application,
Skyworks conducts ESD testing at the system level utilizing the
guidelines specified in IEC 61000-4-2. The IEC standard defines
typical discharge current waveforms, range of test levels, test
equipment, test configuration, and test procedure. System-level
testing simulates the device in an application, such as a switch in
a CELLULAR HANDSET. Test environment must emulate actual enduse
environment.

Just to confuse the issue, later in the document is a part dealing with "décharges électrostatiques" ... in certain contexts such as "Pendant les essais **DES**, les critères suivants sont vérifiés" this might be right, but we must surely have a solution applying to all occurrences of DES, and "en dehors des applications **DES**" doesn't look right.

ESD

DES = décharge électrostatique; see French language Wiki: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Décharge_électrostatique

ESD = electrostatic discharge; see English Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrostatic_discharge

[0051]Therefore, embodiments of the electrostatic discharge protection elements with SiC as semiconductor material or any other semiconductor material with large bandgap, e.g., GaN and Diamond, can be used to provide blocking voltages of +/-40V as required for the above mentioned mobile phone ESD applications..

[0051]After the electrostatic tests of the first and second items, when the electrostatic discharge values are 8 KV and 15 KV, and the specific distance between the tip of the tip portion 142 and the metal case 100 is 0.1 mm or 0.3 mm, the test result (i.e., the residual quantity of the electrostatic charges and the operation condition of the electronic device 10) is "pass", and when the specific distance is larger than 20 mm, the test result is "fail".

thanks Timothy
neutral philgoddard : I don't think this can be anything more than a guess, and I'm not sure it fits some of the contexts - "chargeur de voyage en DES", for example.

data exchange service

The Data Exchange Service (DES) is a World Wide Web (WWW) server installation.
DES operates as an intermediate data queue which facilitates the exchange of Direct
Access (DA) requests and data as well as Core Gas Aggregation requests between PG&E
and ESPs or CTAs across the Internet.
