French term

Conducteur de drainage

French to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng
I'm currently immersed in documentation about the properties of various cables. I have found "Drainage conductor" as a possible translation of the above terms, but it only yields a conspicuously small number of Google hits... and my instincts are telling me to avoid it. Does anybody have any better suggestions?

Sincerest thanks, as ever...

Josh Ord-Hume (asker) Mar 31, 2009:
The term figures in a long list of cable specifications. They are 5.1 mm diameter, shielded (aluminium/polyester foil shielded) cables for electrically wiring the various devices that make up a door entry/security system.
Jennifer Levey Mar 31, 2009:
Please provided more context. How is 'conducteur de drainage' used in your document? And what sort of cables are we talking about (electric power, electronic wiring? other?)

drain conductor

It refers to a bare wire running between the screen and outer protective sheath - in particular in cables that have foil screens - to ensure end-to-end conductivity of the screen so it can be used to make reliable ground/earth connections.

neutral Nils Andersson : If the comments are correct above, then the normal term in English is "ground wire". Really.

No. A 'drain wire' ensures conductivity along a cable. A 'ground wire' is totally different - it provides conductivity to ground/earth.
agree Bourth (X) : Though I'd imagined it as part of a semiconductor.

agree Terry Richards : "Drain wire". It ensures connectivity if the foil shield breaks into sections.

agree Charles Hawtrey (X) : Spot on. The foil is not continuous right along the cable - it's a series of pieces, unlike a wire.
