French term

formation humaine

French to English Bus/Financial Education / Pedagogy Personal development
In a university prospectus, talking about aspects of a degree programme. I realise that this basically means "personal development", but they list this as well as "développement personnel", so I need 2 different phrases! Context: "Semestre 1 : Sciences, Informatique 1, Management 1, Langues et **Formation humaine**
Semestre 2: Sciences appliquées 1, Informatique 2, Projet & Développement personnel, Langues et **Formation humaine**. Any help gratefully received!

Discussion

Nicky Over (asker) Aug 14, 2013:
Thanks for all your contributions. Looking at the various references and again at my text, I am going to go with "Human Relationships". It seems to be a general part of their studies, going into communications, how to relate to others when working with/for them, how to work in a team, etc.
writeaway Aug 14, 2013:
No offence taken at all I was just trying to point out that there is no need to guess or wonder what they mean. Cchat provided valuable refs that explain the whole thing. All education comes under 'personal development' in some way but this is apparently more specific than that.
Lara Barnett Aug 14, 2013:
@ Writeaway There is no need to jump at the assumption that I am discrediting your offer to the asker. I often like to think laterally before I jump to straightforward conclusions. I apologise if this has put you out in some way. // My answer may indeed by completely wide of the mark, in which case I am sure the asker will realise this.
writeaway Aug 14, 2013:
@LaraBarnett There is no need to guess at what it is. The ref I posted here in the Dbox shows a clear example of the curriculum. Doesn't look like personal anything to me.
Lara Barnett Aug 14, 2013:
Personal development Could it be maybe that what the French call "Projet & Développement personnel", is not actually "personal development"in the English sense? i.e. maybe your term is "personal development" and "Développement personnel" is something else altogether.
writeaway Aug 14, 2013:
Looks like general humanities (taken from ref posted by cchat):

Rebecca Lim Aug 14, 2013:
Maybe just human relations?
Nicky Over (asker) Aug 14, 2013:
It is a International technological bachelor's degree, involving digital technologies and management skills. There is no religious relevance at all. I just need a general synonym for "Personal development" - I'm pretty sure "formation humaine" is much the same thing. I initially put "human relationships" but I'm not happy with it.
Rebecca Lim Aug 14, 2013:
Does the course have religious relevance, could it be human formation - http://www.dublinoakacademy.com/new-page-1.aspx, http://www.pcj.edu/formation/formation.html?
cchat Aug 14, 2013:
Humanities? Human resources? Do you have any idea of the content of the course?

disagree Daryo : there's no component of working on student's "personal improvement" / "communication skills" / "leadership" etc in Humanities

(development of) interpersonal communication skills

I think this is the nearest match.

"What are Interpersonal Skills?

Interpersonal skills are the life skills we use every day to communicate and interact with other people, both individually and in groups. People who have worked on developing strong interpersonal skills are usually more successful in both their professional and personal lives.

Employers often seek to hire staff with 'strong interpersonal skills' - they want people who will work well in a team and be able to communicate effectively with colleagues, customers and clients.

Interpersonal skills are not just important in the workplace, our personal and social lives can also benefit from better interpersonal skills. People with good interpersonal skills are usually perceived as optimistic, calm, confident and charismatic - qualities that are often endearing or appealing to others.

Through awareness of how you interact with others, and with practice, you can improve your interpersonal skills. SkillsYouNeed aims to help you learn and develop your interpersonal skills by providing an extensive library of quality content. We hope that you find our content useful and rewarding ..."

disagree writeaway : not if one looks at what it actually entails /it's close to the intended meaning chosen/decided on by Asker, nothing more, nothing less.

agree writeaway : I think you hit the nail on the head with humanities. maybe a good idea if you post it as an answer before someone else comes in and posts it as 'their' answer, as seems par for the course nowadays.
