French term

épreuves de contrôle organisées

French to English Other Education / Pedagogy Certification Of Passing Annual Exam
Is there a standard way of expressing this in education? This has to do with an annual exam after computer science studies.

"L'attestation annuelle sanctionne le réussite à un examen fin d'année ou aux **épreuves de contrôle organisées** en cours d'année..."

I understand that it is a way of exercising control over who gets admitted to a degree, the profession, etc.

Merci!

MatthewLaSon Jan 22, 2009:
Ambiguity here The sentence could mean two different things

1) assessments tests organized throughout the year
2) standard assessments tests throughout the year

I know that I have seen "organisé" mean "standardized"

Ce sont des tests organisés, que l'on suit en cour d'année

neutral MatthewLaSon : There is ambiguity here. Because they could be saying "taking standardized tests throughout the year". It's possible. You can say "c'est un test organisé", which just means "standardized test"

neutral B D Finch : It could be, but continuous assessment is generally on coursework, which is perhaps not "epreuves".

normative assessments

"normative assessments" are tests done during the course of the year, "summative assessments" at the end of the year. The normative assessments track how the student is doing relative to the expected curriculum rate of progress, so that corrective action can be undertaken during the year.

Another term used by some institutions is "formative" assessment, where the emphasis is on adjustments made to the program during the course of the year.

standardized (assessment) exams

Hello,

I think that your problem is really the translation of "organisées". That just means that these exams are standardized.

I hope this helps.

épreuve de contrôle = assessment exam

I think that "épreuve" and "contrôle" mean pretty much the same thing.

agree PRen (X) : Yup

Thanks! I thought that "organisée" meant "standardized", but with the "en cours d'année" after it, I'm less sure. But I still sticking with what I originally thought.
