French term

offres publiques d'acquisition

Homework / test French to English Bus/Financial Economics Autorit des marchs financiers
Hi everyone,

I'm struggling to find this. I've found offre publique d'achat and others. It's from the title of a Bill:

"Projet de loi relatif aux offres publique d'acquisition"

Perhaps there is not even a difference between this and offre publique d'achat? I did find one possibility: takeover bids. Is this correct?

TIA!

Thanks Bianca.
lenkl Oct 2, 2005:
Sorry: 'takeover bid' of course.
lenkl Oct 2, 2005:
My point is still that it's the same thing - an "OPA". How you translate it depends on the context and "tekover bid" is certainly right in the context of the EU directive, just as 'offeree company' should be used instead of 'target company'.
Bianca Jacobsohn (asker) Oct 2, 2005:
Great link Thanks, writeaway!
writeaway Oct 2, 2005:
it's not Belgian. here's an EU ref-just find the language you want: http://europa.eu.int/scadplus/leg/fr/lvb/l26012a.htm
lenkl Oct 2, 2005:
It is the same thing, in an unsual form. Possibly from Belgium.

A takeover bid for purchase/aquisition would depend on the rest of the sentence :)

tender offers

takeover bid applies only when the bid is for the controlling interest in the company, which may not always be the case...

A formal offer by a company to buy a certain amount of its own securities or another company's securities at a stated price within a specified time limit. The offer price is usually at a premium above the current market price. When the offer is for another company's shares, it usually involves a takeover attempt. The Securities and Exchange Commission requires any corporate suitor that acquires more than 5% of a company to disclose its position. BACK TO TOP

disagree Christopher RH : same reason as lenkl. If anyone says OPA when they mean OPV, OPO, OPF or OPM, they are just making a mistake
