French term

lunette

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering water treatment
This appears to be a type of level. In my context (setting up a municipal water treatment unit), it is being used to ensure that a water trough is level. I have no other description unfortunately. Does someone have an idea of what kind of level this could be? Thanks.

transit

This is the common name in AE for what others are referring to as a tilting level or engineer's level.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to everyone for your help. From what I can gather, a transit and a tilting level are two different items (see also http://www.reference-wordsmith.com/cgi-bin/lookup.cgi?exact=1&terms=level), and I can't say for sure which one the author intended, but I will use transit in my context only because it sounds less specific somehow. Thanks again."

sight

I have the following references to 'lunette' in my good civil engineering glossary:

Lunette d'alésage Boring back-rest
Lunette de traçage horizontal Horizontal scribing sight
Lunette de visée Aligning sight

See also the following net reference to a "LINE OF SIGHT TOOL":

Tilting Level (Engineer's Level)

apparently the wild nk1 is a "niveau à lunette" in French, make what you will...

one of several types of optical instruments

Under "lunette", Dicobat gives only:

lunette ... 3. [TOPOGR.]
[Dicobat]

The Dict. multilingue de la Fédération Internationale des Géomètres defines "lunette stadimétrique" (a variant of which is the "lunette anallatique") in much the same way and gives the English as "stadia measuring telescope, stadimetric telescope".

And "anallactic telescope" for "lunette anallactique".

However, I suspect it is really something much simpler, i.e. the good old "level", a sighting instrument (telescope) fitted with a spirit level or two that is used to determine level planes. A/c to Blake's Civil Engineering Reference Book, it comes in three flavours: dumpy level, tilting level, and automatic level, the details of which (on several pages) I shall not go into!

The "Géomètres" book gives "levels" of different kinds as "niveau à lunette fixe, à lunette réversible", etc.
