I always thought it meant departure from the specs, hence my proposed DEVIATION(S) which is a more fitting term than your variations which is not so much a departure from but rather an alternative to the specs

Many thanks Thank you all for your suggestions - all correct - which have brought me back full circle to the "variations" which I had in my first draft!. I like Dusty's suggestion that it might possibly mean departures from the specification; it fits the context, but with "variations" I was hedging my bets too!
