I see from your next question that it does indeed include the façade of the building, along with window frames, etc.
It is a kind of protective treatment/coating, e.g. varnishing.

That said, the coating would appear to penetrate the surface of the wood more deeply than normal varnish, so wood staining could be more appropriate.
