French term
mise en espace
French to English
Art/Literary
Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
Theatre
Context:
The article is about the usage of video in the theatre for an opera.
The only thing I can come up with is "floorplan". I checked the entry for mise en espace dating back to 2002 and cannot find anything that goes with the context. "Blocking" is perfect for a film environment, but we are talking about traditional theatre "mise en espace".
Any suggestions?

three-dimensional staging OR staging in depth
They're talking about the way the director is obliged to give up the traditional idea of setting the action in such a way as to exploit the whole volume of the stage (principally area, hence 2-D, but of course height is also available...)
I think 'three-dimensional staging' conveys the idea well (NOT 3-D, I'd suggest!), though I confess that I have invented the term and have no idea if it is currently used in the biz.
If you want to get pretentious, you could say 'volumatic staging' !!!
It's the old idea of 'making use of the whole of the stage' --- or in this case, NOT!

: I don't believe it's referring to the auditorium as such, but rather, the way the stage space is used

Post Grading - Mise en espace
hi Miranda,
you've no doubt handed in your text by now, and I'm sure Tony's answer worked just fine in this case, but for future reference I just wanted to add that this term is often left in French, as it doesn't really have an English equivalent. The article below provides a brief explanation, as does the Int. Herald Tribune article.

The British conductor John Eliot Gardiner has now conducted three different productions of Oberon: at the Opéra de Lyon in 1986, when Planché's English text was given in its entirety; at the Zurich Opera in 1998, in a German version; and most recently at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris — where, with his assistant, Colin Window, he has devised what the French precisely describe as a "mise-en-espace" — something less than a full mise-en-scène, but considerably more than a semi- or concert staging.
