I think it is an English term originally anyway. With the name of your company, you might find the acronym explkained on their website.

Using OPI in a PDF workflow
OPI is a technology that allows the embedding of low-resolution versions of images in a file. This can lead to savings in storage and network bandwidth. The smaller images will be swapped out with the original images whenever the high-res data are needed.

PDF supports OPI since version 1.2 (Acrobat 3). From PDF 1.3 onwards, both OPI 1.3 and 2.0 comments are supported. This makes the file format compatible with any OPI-solution that is available on the market.
PDF files containing OPI-images are commonly referred to as ‘thin PDF files’. PDF files containing only high resolution images are sometimes called ‘fat PDF files’.

I haven’t used OPI in the past 8 years so all of the information below is rather old. Add a comment if you have information that you would like to share about using OPI with PDF files.

What is OPI printing, by John Lister.

Open Prepress Interface technology is used in the publishing industry to streamline the workflow of creating and editing large documents. OPI involves using low-resolution images while working on a document and then high-resolution images when printing it to reduce the processing power needed on the computer.

Status
OPI is an extension for PostScript, which is a computer language used for the creation of large graphic files. PostScript is most commonly associated with the creation of print files in publishing.

Need
The image files needed to house the electronic details for a picture to be printed at high resolution -- as opposed to simply being detailed enough to display on a screen -- can be enormous. This causes a problem with desktop publishing applications as it increases the total amount of data relating to a page or a publication. This is particularly troublesome as such applications work best when most or all the data for a page can be held in the computer's memory, allowing quick responses when the user edits the page -- changing text or altering the layout, for example.

Setup
OPI involves creating two copies of each image to be used in a publication. One is a high-resolution version that is stored on a remote server. The other is a low-resolution version, which is stored on the server or on the user's computer. The low-res copy is displayed on screen while the user is editing the page. Ideally, the resolution is just high enough that the user can see how the image will appear in print, but with no additional detail; a resolution 72 dots per inch is typical. When the user creates the final print file, the low-res version is automatically replaced with the information from the high-res version.

Benefits
OPI is more beneficial when used with color images than with monochrome images, as color images are considerably larger. It also avoids the need to repeatedly load and handle the same data if the publication uses the same image more than once. Using OPI can streamline file management. To use OPI correctly, all the high-resolution files must be kept in the same location to reduce the risk of them being scattered across different machines and being inaccessible at the time of printing.
