French term

pleine-terre

French to English Science Botany
I know this term has been asked before on proz.com, but I'm not sure any of the answers given then apply to my case.

The context I have is limited - simply the term and the following definition:

'Plantes cultivées en plein air, sans abri'.

My first thought was 'outdoor plant' or 'outdoor planting'. But that could also refer to plants in containers, and 'pleine-terre' seems to imply it is planted directly in the soil, and not in a container. So, I also thought of 'direct planting' and 'direct seeding' or 'directly seeded' or even 'direct seed', since it appears to be used as a noun or an adjective here. Maybe 'directly planted' would be suitable too?

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance!!

Pleine-terre Hi! Well, the term I'm looking for is 'pleine-terre' but I also have to translate the definition. But what puzzles me is that the French term (pleine-terre) does not seem to match the defintion precisely. That's part of my problem!
Is the term pleine-terre or plein air?

direct planting

wikipedia gives this as "direct planting" as opposed to planting in containers. In garden books(for flowers) it is sometimes "direct gerden planting" and agricultural "direct field planting"

the term that was requested was "Pleine-terre"- and so I gave the answer "direct planting".
On the other hand- if the question nyou are asking is to translate 'Plantes cultivées en plein air, sans abri' then "outdoor planting" is suitable- since the alternative is "under cover or in a glass/green house.

"Hardy" does not necessarily mean the plant itself will survive winter. The seeds of hardy annuals do and will germinate in the spring.
