I think it's Par-Gravats / gravel shield
Seems to be the only thing that makes any sense close to the bumper

I agree \"gravats\" is odd here, but in English it would be called a belly pan, or a bib in some circles. I can\'t think of anything else that would be clipped to a bumper; BY one yes, On one, no.

Bourth (X)
: Makes a lot of sense, even if "gravats" (rubble) seems odd in the circumstances.

I would have said "graviers" but I couldn't make it fit the mis-spelling

safety shield, safety housing
My guess is it's a shield to prevent people getting sucked into the engine and strangled when they lean over it and their tie gets caught up in the mechanism.

I\'m leaving my answer, en cas de doute, but think Zaphod\'s proposal deserves serious consideration, even if \"gravat\" would be odd here. There ARE plenty of hits for \"pare-gravats\" on the Web, but in reference to netting on scaffolding, for obvious reasons.
My little automotive dictionary DOES give \"pare-pierre\": Grille de protection fixée extérieurement à la carrosserie et à proximité de certains organes, dans le cas où le véhicule est destiné à circuler dans un environnement dangereux (gives GRILL as translation).
I know rally cars tend to be fitted with such things to prevent road stones being thrown up into the engine compartment. Given a recent accident, they should be placed beneath the navigator\'s seat too!

Then again maybe it\'s a beach buggy and this is a \"pare-crevette\".

Zaphod: We don\'t know that whatever it is that is clipped somewhere IS clipped to the bumper. All we know is that the clips are not accessible because behind the pare-crevettes and that the only way to access them is to remove the bumper. I wonder why we can\'t simply remove the pare-crevettes?
I wonder if the 4x4 version of the car comes with a pare-écrévisse.

Also wonder why they don\'t do what most people in garages do: give the thing a yank, break off the clips, and not bother putting it back.
Also also wonder why they don\'t shoot the designer.
