French term

cône de revolution du plip

French to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks Anti-theft devices
Context:

Perhaps I've started work too early, but 'revolving cones' have got me guessing.
All contributions appreciated.
TIA Chris.

Discussion

B D Finch Jun 10, 2015:
Plip Thanks for publicising this delightful word and I hope to find an opportunity to use it!
chris collister Jun 9, 2015:
WOuld I be right in saying that that there is a "plip" in all these other verrous, as well as in the key fob? Into what is the hand passing? Why does it matter? "SVB" = "spécifications......"?
Tony M Jun 9, 2015:
And then... ... you've also got the cone so you can pass your hand...?!

I could have imagine the 3 mm might have been an outside tolerance limit; but the third instance seems to be something much more physical.

I really think you may have to ask the customer for explanation on this one.
chris collister Jun 9, 2015:
Hard to say - but a picture is worth a thousand words. Unless "jeu" in this context is taken to mean not so much mechanical play, but rather a "plus or minus" region of influence. I'm just guessing, really. I daresy it means something to the author...
Bashiqa (asker) Jun 9, 2015:
Agree so far but, what do you make of the 3 mm play around the previous cone? It might be directional but not down to 3 mm.
chris collister Jun 9, 2015:
So far as I can tell from your blurb, the "cone of revolution" is the effective volume of influence or sensitivity of this widget, which is presumably an RF device. If it's a cone, it must be quite directional, which implies that the frequency of operation must be very high. Of course, in reality it wouldn't be a cone in the strictly mathematical sense, but rather an invisible "lobe" in space.
Bashiqa (asker) Jun 9, 2015:
Hi,
Plip is the 'thingy' forming part of the key fob for opening and closing doors, starting engine etc. So where the cone comes in????
chris collister Jun 9, 2015:
Yes, much too early - me too! I'm assuming you know what a "plip" is (?) but "cone of revolution" is a common enough term in engineering, ie the solid form traced out by a straight line revolving about an axis, the straight line being at some non-zero angle to the axis. Analogously, other "solids of revolution", eg spheres, ellipsoids etc.

cone of revolution

They are not taking about it's RF signature but it's actual physical presence. The plip is the fattest part of the key and they are just saying that there should be enough room for it and the hand holding it in all of the places it is used - the ignition, the air bag switch, the doors, the filler cap, etc.

It's a cone because (a) it is rotated and (b) it is fatter at one end than the other (including the hand).

Note from asker:
That sounds more sensible, knew I should have stayed in bed longer this morning.
Something went wrong...
