French term
charge magique
French to English
Art/Literary
Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
African art
This term is repeatedly used in a text about African sculpture and masks used for ritualistic purposes. Although I understand the meaning I can't find an English equivalent. As I understand it it seems to be a mix of substances, bones, plants etc that was either placed in a special cavity in the sculpture or rubbed over the statue .All ideas welcome.TIA Lisa

magical substances/bilongo
Maybe it cannot be translated. Can you use the word 'bilongo', the African word, instead?
From the web reference below:
This enigmatic figure remains a mystery unless you understand that its most important part, the "bilongo", made up of earth and different organic matter, including sacrificial blood, is shrouded in cloth tied on with cords. This is the essential magic element.

magic charge
This gets more relevant hits than "magical" (see google: "magic charge" + anthropology, for example), but I don't find it convincing.
