French term

coter gauche

French to English Tech/Engineering Agriculture For a well known manufacturer of tractors - wiring diagram
I initially thought this might be a typo for côté, but it crops up all through the text (list without explanations) - I know 'coter' as a verb, but could this be something else? All help much appreciated!

definitely typo "implantation armoire côté gauche" makes perfect sense - definitely "côté"
Tony M Aug 8, 2017:
@ Asker Yes, even that single non-sentence context example makes it pretty clear that it is indeed the typo P/G and I have both instinctively thought.

It's interesting the way we started noticing typical 'scannos' when OCR became common, and not we are seeing the equivalent 'dictos' now that text dictation programmes are becoming widespread; sad that the highly literate secretary seems to have been replaced by a dumb machine...

'Implantation armoire coter gauche' - the problem is that there is no real text - just labels, but thank you both, I think I will stick with my hunch of côté - I feel much reassured :-)
Tony M Aug 8, 2017:
Typo It is indeed almost certainly a typo — a poor manual or automatic transcription from dictation, compounded by a spell-checker that does not see it as 'wrong', since this word does indeed exist.
That said, if you gave us some actual examples of how it appears, we might be able to understand better; apart from just the repetition, is there anything else that makes you think it can't be 'côté'?
polyglot45 Aug 8, 2017:
it's systematically a typo for côté (or côte = dimension), more probably the first. Someone can't spell or the spellcheck went crazy

Pretty clear this has to be some kind of typo or transcription error.

Note that this would not have been corrected by a spell-checker, since 'coter' is a valid word in its own right.
