French term

gain de masse

French to English Tech/Engineering Aerospace / Aviation / Space propulsion assembly
Hello,

is this a gain in mass as in heavier? I'm not sure if I'm understanding this properly

Thank you

Discussion

mchd Feb 8, 2014:
kashew Feb 8, 2014:
CC has a good point - weight reduction is more sought after.
chris collister Feb 8, 2014:
It seems to me that the piece has been poorly written, and that the author (or his patent agent) intended to say that an improvement had been gained by losing mass (not gaining it). Any fool can add mass, but losing it safely is quite tricky.

mass gain

Obvious translation is right in this case: this is a gain because any mass saving is a gain in an aircraft, and "mass" properly specified in source is better than "weight": it does not depend on the altitude, when the weight does vary for a same mass

disagree chris collister : Maybe so (or not), but "mass gain" is ambiguous at best and misleading at worst. The expression is "gain de masse" not mass saving. It may, possibly, be correct in FR, but not in EN

increase in weight

limits the distorsion... thereby increasing the capacity of the suspension system to meet more weight

The "weight increase" relates to the increased payload capacity not to an actual gain in weight.

I don't understand how this works.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Daryo : it's exactly the opposite
