register overflow

As you suspected, it's register overflow.

A computer register is where it holds the numbers to perform a calculation on them and where it puts the answer. They are a fixed size and, if the answer needs more bits than are available the register overflows and one end of the number (normally the high end) is lost.

As an example, if a register was 8 decimal digits, it could hold an answer up to 99,999,999. If the answer was supposed to be 100,000,001, the register would contain 1 which would be a slight error!

Of course, real registers are binary but the principle is the same.

With regard to unanticipated/unexpected, I offered a translation of the term entered which was "débordement de registre".

In this case, I would agree that the "non anticipé", as mentioned in the context, is important but it wasn't included in the term to be translated.

agree Tony M : And probably 'unexpected' for 'non anticipé', I'd have thought?

agree cc in nyc : register overflow will do it

agree Daryo : "unanticipated" is the right one not to be omitted - any programmer worth his salt would "anticipate" all possible situations, instead of relying on "expecting" something to happen or not.
