French term

balayage

French to English Tech/Engineering Aerospace / Aviation / Space Solenoid valve test procedures
9.2.1.3.2 Balayage N2
L’influence du balayage N2 dépend fortement de la position de l’EV dans le BEVM. L’influence sur la température de l’EV N°8 (près du mamelon alimentation du balayage N2) est de -10°C alors que l’influence sur l’EV N°3 est négligeable.

In this context would flushing be appropriate. Not certain what N2 means at this point. It could be Nitrogen perhaps, don't know.
TIA Chris.

BEVM = Motor solenoid valve unit

Discussion

chris collister Oct 30, 2011:
Scanning? There is something called a "scanivalve" used to measure multiple pressure tappings where scanning does indeed occur. However, in this context, Tony is (as ever) correct in interpreting balayage as "flushing"; "purging" is also used.
Bashiqa (asker) Oct 29, 2011:
Thanks Ronald. It's been a long day and there's more in store. Flushing will do fine.
Ronald van Riet Oct 29, 2011:
N2 is the nitrogen molecule N is the element but the gas consists of molecules
Bashiqa (asker) Oct 29, 2011:
But nitrogen is just 'N' isn't it?
Ronald van Riet Oct 29, 2011:
I agree and N2 is indeed nitrogen see http://bbaroux.free.fr/pro/ecole/EEG2A07/EMC2A07.pdf and search for N2

flushing

Yes, with N2 = nitrogen

Basically getting rid of initial contents with an inert gas, i.e. nitrogen.

As CC says, 'purging' is also used.

agree nokostya : I may also consider scaveging

Thanks, nokostya! Yes, 'scavenging' is also used, but I'm not sure that meaning would be applicable here.

disagree Ronald van Riet : it is a gas here used to flush a cavity clean so this is definitely a wrong answer

disagree Tony M : This is only one meaning of the term, and I'm afraid as the context makes it clear, this would be the wrong meaning in this context.
