"Check for tightness" is the common expression you will find, but they really want you to check for leakage. (It could be tight and still leak!)

agree Robert Frankling : "check (fuel) gauge for tightness" ...you could say "check for tightness/leaks" to be more precise. Leakage = bad reading.
