English term

an original process or take on sampled material counts

English Art/Literary Music Remix
Hi there

I'm having a hard time understanding the structure and meaning of the sentence between **:

"A good remix is defined by its signature original elements. It might be composing a new bass line, playing in some extra keys, or adding a new kick drum. You may decide the originality is already there; **an original process or take on sampled material counts**".

I simply don't understand the way the sentence is constructed. Can you please help me make sense of it? Thanks :-)

that's reassuring :-) It's a great text overall and I'm having a great time translating it, but every now and again I stumble into weird sentences like this one. I guess Dimitris is right, though - the sentence should read: an original process or an (original) take [noun] on [preposition] sampled material counts, i.e. may be enough to give a remix an original flair. I was reading "take on" as a verb, then an a noun (i.e. as take-on), so the sentence wasn't making any sense to me.

no wonder... The sentence is puzzling even for a native English speaker (or at least this one). Perhaps what the author meant to write is 'You may decide that the originality is already there (i.e. in the existing mix, so nothing else is needed), or you can use an original process or include some sampled material'.

explanation

an original process=a new and original way of doing things, in this case a new way of making/composing music

an (original) take on sampled material= a new way of presenting or using sampled material

counts= is important.

In other words, a new or interesting way of working or using/interpreting sampled material is important (and may contribute to the overall originality of the piece/remix).

My pleasure, Adele!

Hi Dimitris, I guess you are right :-) Indeed, your interpretation makes perfect sense. Thanks.

agree Demi Ebrite : The statement makes sense to me; it's not just the composition that makes a work unique, it is also the process and variables available with the use of remix equipment that adds originality.

A quote about one artist's remix process:

One signature here is the time-stretching of the track, resulting in a tightening of the drumming sounds, and so on.

"Winners of Remix magazine and Puma's 1977 remix contest, Jaded
Lover, talk about their process of making their remix of Chic's "Everybody Dance."

"The first thing we did was to import the audio file of the complete song into Ableton Live, where we time-stretched the entire track in order to tighten up the drumming. Then we selected snippets of the tune..."
