English term

contact values

English Medical Medical (general)
Could you please explain me what the "contact values" are?
Thanks,
B.

CONTEXT
Reports by Haukkarinen et al. (Haukkarinen et al. Journal of Pathology, (1996) 180,200-205) describe studies of contact values between sensory nerves containing SP, CGRP, and VIP, and mast cells containing active tryptase and inactive chymase. The contact values of SP and CGRP with mast cells are increased in psoriatic lesions, whereas contact values for VIP are decreased.
Tryptase effectively cleaves CGRP as well as VIP but not SP, whereas chymase cleaves SP.

number of points of contact

after reading the abstract of Naukkarinen (See spelling btw) et al. from pubmed, i would say that they counted points where some neuronal endings "touched" the mast cells. Contact values do not occur in other papers, so maybe this is the way of saying it by Finnish scientists. Also, according to the abstract, they used a scanning microscope, which implies that these points are very small, just like you would expect the nerve endings to be.
