English term

preferred posting(s)

English Other Mechanics / Mech Engineering Application form
This is on an application form for a traineeship under "Other", right after "Preferred department(s)". I'm not sure what it means. Is it preferred position? Posting doesn't seem to have this meaning.

the place where you would prefer to work

In a situation where a company, or a public body has many offices all over the country, or all over the world, jobs in deifferent offices are referred to as 'postings' - for example, an overseas posting.

So in this context, a posting is when the employee is sent by their employer to work in a different place. This also applies to the armed forces, of course.

In the first part of my answer, it should of course read 'different offices' - sorry about the typo.

agree Jack Doughty : Yes, "posting" is the correct term in the armed forces (I was in the RAF for 14 years).

And in the Civil Service (I worked there for nearly 5 years). Private companies also use it! Thank you :-)

agree Will Matter : Yup. Your 'post' is your job and your 'preferred posting' is the place that you'd like to work the most.
