English term

We are independent of this establishment

English Other Law (general)
What does "We are independent of this establishment" exactly mean here?

"This advocacy service is a UK-wide charity working with children and young people. We are here to make sure your voice is heard. We are independent of this establishment"

Discussion

Oliver Lawrence Feb 10, 2010:
indeed The extract clearly reads as though "this advocacy service" and the "We" in the second sentence are the same, and that "this establishment" is some other organisation. There are three references ("this advocacy service", "we" and "this establishment"), and the third sentence makes it clear that they are not all the same. To me it is not clear, given what you have said, who "we" are, so the thing to do would be to seek clarification with the author/your client.

dilemma That is the dilemma Oliver, that was the openening paragraph and no other organization is mentioned in the enitre document expect their own

we are not connected with the organisation mentioned earlier

the "establishment" being some group, body, organisation, etc. that must have been mentioned just before. The advocacy service is provided independently of it.

agree Maurite Fober : yes; probably part of a larger info document e.g. I've seen this sort of thing on a hospital brochure given to pregnant women listing family planning & post-natal depression services not connected to the hospital itself.

We are independent of the UK Government

"The establishment" may be used in the UK to mean the political-administrative class in general. By saying "This establishment", it might be taken to refer to the current government of the UK (But it it is independent of THIS establishment in that sense, why would it not be equally independent of any other?)

Thank you.
neutral Oliver Lawrence : if it had said "The establishment" I might agree, although it would be a somewhat figurative use for this context, but "this establishment" IMHO is unlikely to refer to the government. It's still a bit of a mystery, though ...:)

Yes, it is indeed still a mystery, that's why I gave it such a low confidence level.
